Contains information pertaining to the following military unit: 1st United States (U.S.) Dragoon Regiment. General description of the collection: The John Fynn papers include photocopies of a typescript copy of the memoirs of John Fynn, written some time after 1862, concerning his tour of duty with the 1st U.S. Dragoon Regiment, 1839-1844, plus his return from the Indian Territory to Missouri in 1845. During his service, he was based at Carlisle Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, and Fort Gibson. He frequently mentions his company commander, Captain Nathan Boone, and his regimental commander, Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny.

Nathan Boone was the youngest child of Daniel Boone, the pioneer of the Kentucky frontier. In 1796, Nathan and his family moved to what is now the state of Missouri. During the War of 1812 he was the Captain of a company of Missouri volunteers. In 1820, Nathan was elected as a delegate to the state constitutional commission.
